DonorAtlas Virtuous Integration

Virtuous Quick Start Guide

Connect your Virtuous organization to DonorAtlas and sync your first contact.

Last updated: October 2026

Before you begin

  • You're an administrator in Virtuous. Only administrators can create API keys and custom fields.
  • You're an Admin or Configure Only user on your DonorAtlas team.
  • Your team has import credits. A bulk sync spends one per newly matched contact.

About 20 minutes.

Part 1

In Virtuous

A Virtuous administrator does these three steps.

1

Create the DonorAtlas custom fields

Virtuous doesn't let DonorAtlas create fields, so you create one custom field for each DonorAtlas value you want written. You'll connect them to DonorAtlas in step 5.

  1. Open SettingsAll SettingsData CustomizationCustom Fields and Collections.
  2. Create a Custom Field Group on Contact named DonorAtlas, and turn on showing it as a tab on the contact record.
  3. Inside the group, add one field for each value below that you want, with the type shown. A text value can also go in a Paragraph field.

Name each field after its DonorAtlas value

Your team will recognize them in Virtuous, and the type is what matters to DonorAtlas: the Configure page only offers a field whose type can hold the value.

Pick the type carefully

Virtuous can't change a field's type after it's created. If you pick the wrong one, create a new field.

A good first set

Start with these five. You can add more fields at any time.

Add collections for repeating data

Optional

Employment, education, board seats and foundations have one row per entry, so they go in a Custom Collection on Contact rather than a field. Create a collection for each you want, with the columns below. You can leave out any column, or start with one collection.

Create an API key

  1. Open SettingsAll SettingsConnectivityAPI Keys and click New API Key.
  2. Name it DonorAtlas and choose the Admin permission group, or a custom group with Contact Read and Write. Add Contact Delete if you'll let DonorAtlas write verified contact information.
  3. Make sure Active is ticked, save, and copy the key.
Part 2

In DonorAtlas

A DonorAtlas Admin or Configure Only user does steps 4 and 5.

4

Connect your team

  1. Sign in to DonorAtlas and open Integrations.
  2. Click Connect Virtuous, paste the key, and click Connect Virtuous.

DonorAtlas checks the key against your organization and takes you to the Configure page. Entering the key also connects you personally.

5

Choose what syncs

  1. Click Fill in matches by name. Every value whose field you named after it in step 1 is ticked and pointed at that field.
  2. Check Single values. Tick anything the button missed: DonorAtlas picks one of your fields that can hold it, and you can change the choice beside it. Leave the rest unticked.
  3. Under Repeating data, choose a collection for each kind you created in step 2, then which column each part goes in.
  4. Click Save configuration. You should see “Saved. DonorAtlas will write these fields from now on.”

Optional

Write verified contact information onto Virtuous records
Adds the verified email, mobile phone and mailing address to the contact.
Let DonorAtlas overwrite values already in these fields
Lets a sync write over values your team changed. Leave it off unless the fields are DonorAtlas's alone.
Add the donor's photo
Uploads the donor's photo to the contact. Virtuous can't remove it later.
6

Sync your first contact

  1. Open any donor's profile in DonorAtlas and click the Virtuous Sync button.
  2. Click Match automatically, or search Virtuous by name, pick the contact and click Link selected.

What “Match automatically” does

  • A sure match: links that contact and writes your fields.
  • No match: creates a contact and writes your fields.
  • Only the name matches: links the contact if the name is uncommon and no other contact has it. Otherwise it creates a new contact, and the job names the look-alike so you can merge them if they're the same person.

The button reads Syncing… while it works and View when it's done. View opens the contact in Virtuous.

7

Check the result in Virtuous

Open the contact in Virtuous and go to its DonorAtlas tab. You should see:

  • Your DonorAtlas custom fields filled in.
  • One row per entry in each collection you set up.
8

Invite your team

Everyone else connects themselves in one click: they open Integrations in DonorAtlas and click Connect your account on the Virtuous card. There's no Virtuous sign-in.

IntegrationsUsers & connections shows who's connected, lets you set what each person can do (Sync, Unsync, Bulk), and has instructions you can paste to them.
Next

Bulk sync a Tag or Organization Group

Open IntegrationsVirtuousBulk sync and click Sync on a Tag or Organization Group. DonorAtlas matches and writes every member that isn't synced yet. Progress shows on the row and in the jobs panel.

Each newly matched contact uses one import credit. Re-syncs, unsyncs and the nightly refresh are free. The User Manual covers everything else.
